The Protestant Bishop of Jerusalem
Samuel Gobat was a Swiss Protestant missionary and Anglican bishop known for his pioneering work in Ethiopia and Jerusalem. Sent by the Church Missionary Society in 1826, he faced significant resistance from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and political instability while translating parts of the Bible into Amharic and engaging in educational and medical outreach.
Despite periods of imprisonment and expulsion, Gobat's efforts laid the groundwork for future Protestant missions in Ethiopia. In 1846, he became the Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem, where he continued his missionary work, fostering interfaith dialogue and establishing educational institutions. His dedication to missionary work and religious education left a lasting legacy in both regions.
